Center January 18JR United Way and Safe Rides Host Dance for High Schoolers
The
, in collaboration with Safe Rides of Greenwich, will host “Cabin Fever”, a dance for all high school age students who live or go to school in Greenwich on Saturday January 18th from 8:30-11:30pm at
Arch
Street
Teen
Center.
This not-to-be-missed event is the latest in a series of high school social nights sponsored by Greenwich Avenue Initiative whose initial event for local youth was “Novemberfest: Can U Jam?”, presented in 2006.
Initiative was formed in direct response to police concerns arising in early 2006 over negative teen behavior on
and an apparent lack of constructive activity.
Very quickly, the fledgling
began to identify ways to bridge the gaps in the diverse
Greenwich student population and to find opportunities for young people to be part of the solution to community concerns. “The challenge was to help teens come to the conclusion on their own that organized activities can be fun,” says Jenny Byxbee, the Town’s Youth Services Coordinator. “With a series of successful events now on the books, it is apparent that they’ve done that.”
By way of agreement, Sgt. Michael Reynolds of the Greenwich Police Department reports that “Juvenile Delinquency on
has decreased by 50% since the start of these high school nights that have been so well-coordinated by the
.”
“Cabin Fever” night has been organized and will be executed by high school students (the JR United Way chapters including those at Greenwich High School, Sacred Heart, Greenwich Academy, and Brunswick), along with volunteers from Safe Rides in Greenwich.
The January 18th teen night will feature food proudly donated by Garden Catering of Greenwich and live entertainment from DJ, Richie Vance. Admission is a $10 donation to the Greenwich Ave Initiative, which helps support efforts to connect local youth to local services.
“Cabin Fever” has been made possible by many community partners and sponsors including: The Greenwich Police Department, Greenwich Coalition to Combat Underage Drinking,
Arch
Street
Teen
Center, The United Way of
Greenwich, The American Red Cross, Garden Catering, and through private donations.
