Lagniappe Housewarming Party
We held another one of our “Lagniappe Housewarming” parties over this past weekend at a client’s new home. She closed on her home recently, and at our suggestion, after all the boxes were emptied, she allowed us to throw her a dinner party to introduce their friends and family to their new home.
Doing this “little something extra” is what the concept of “lagniappe” is all about. In New Orleans, where I lived for several years, lagniappe refers to giving “a little more” (for example, receiving a baker’s dozen doughnuts or bagels) when receiving goods or services.
It was a perfect summer evening, and we gathered on the terrace early due to the fireworks planned for the evening. Kids played games in the yard while the adults talked about the area events, sailing, summer horse shows, new movies, books we were each reading, etc. We enjoyed a typical New Orleans meal of jambalaya, French bread and a huge salad which I always make for these because kids and adults love it. Alice brought along great cookies and other dessert treats. It was a nice evening to sit outside and linger at the table over conversation—but 4th of July fireworks wait for no one, so we were all on our way before 9pm and it was great fun!
